Two properties are managed by the Pinola Conservancy. Both properties and the associated Pinola Aviary prioritize conservation education. The aviary features over 300 species of many families of birds from across the world. The aviary produces birds for zoos and other private aviaries. It also focuses on educating youth and adults about conservation and science through multiple events associated with Ducks Unlimited, Louisiana Tech, and LSU, including undergraduate and graduate schools of both universities and its website (http://www.pinola.net/). The LSU Waterfowl biology undergraduate class and graduate program visits Pinola Plantation twice annually through classes led by Dr. Kevin Ringelman and Dr. Luke Laborde. Hands-on experience with waterfowl banding is often a focus of these visits, and 1000-2000 ducks are banded per year. The aviary’s website contains thousands of photographs, live web cams and educational tools for anyone.

The Pinola Conservancy and Aviary provide important benefits for many bird guilds prioritized by the LMVJV and other conservation groups. Their influence on surrounding landowners can’t be understated. For more than 25 years they have been leading by example, particularly in the realm of wetland habitat management for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent species. In addition to these activities, Mr. Paul Dickson has been a staunch supporter of conservation efforts through his support of Ducks Unlimited for more than 30 years and his personal advocacy for sound, science-based policies at the state and national levels. For example, he was recognized by Ducks Unlimited for his extensive volunteer efforts that successfully led to a $10-increase for the Federal Duck Stamp.
